Ben Kweller with Watson Twins
February 17th, 2009
Varsity Theater, Minneapolis, MN

Ben Kweller got back together with his old friend the Varsity Theater Tuesday night with an air of enthusiasm and the familiarity of an old friend. Kweller also made a new friend last night in the form of a somewhat unruly new acoustic guitar whose strings broke halfway through the first song. However, this didn’t seem to phase Kweller the least as he immediately switched back to an old reliable guitar.

Kweller’s strong acoustic backed by liquid lap steel and a thick mustang bass got along well with the velvet walls of the Varsity. The set took off with a mix songs from Kweller’s most recent self-titled album including “Penny On the Train Track” and old favorites like “How It Should Be (Sha Sha).” Eventually things eased into a slower mood, but were picked up near the end of the set where Kweller made an exciting surprise jump into “This is War,” which capped off the show with a courageous burst of energy.
