So when I got my hands on the super advance of Fujiya & Miyagi’s Lightbulbs back in August I was pumped. I’m talking yelled out loud and scared small children excited.
Transparent Things, F&M’s early 2007 release, is a staple of my work week, but I was pretty dim on Lightbulbs (Deaf Dumb and Blind Records) and put off reviewing it.
The first two tracks, “Knickerbocker” and “Uh,” are familiar, upbeat F&M classics in the making. But “Pickpocket” drags and “Goosebumps” is a near four minute snoozer.
The LP picks up again off and on. For example, “Pteradactyls” is a highlight of the album, but buried on Track 8.
“Knickerbocker” itself is a fab single, and I would recommend this album overall. However, I suggest you implement your own personal Genius Mode and shift up the tracks to get rid of the slow baggage. A thought: perhaps they should have released the album as a two-side vinyl LP rather than alternating the draggers with the head bobbers.
