What is Beware Fashionable Women?
We’re an LA four piece band playing what we would define as indie music.
Okay, “indie” — but how would you describe your sound?
BFW has been described as a combination of several influential bands, among them: The Violent Femmes, Weezer, The Beach Boys, and The Eels. The band explores various influences and styles while maintaining a distinctly indie rock sound. The self titled album contains ten tracks of various styles and influences. We recorded the album ourselves under my recording/composition entity, Spearhead Audio.
What’s the story with your track “Obligatoy Tattoo”?
Before writing the song, I had the chorus melody and title in mind. For about three years, whenever I would see an attractive girl walk by and then see her tattoo, I would sing the chorus to myself. Eventually I decided to sit down and write an actual song around that idea. Though the song is largely fictional, the genesis of the tune is from those experiences. Many people have said it’s their favorite pick on the album.
You’ve said people will either love or hate BFW - why is that?
I think what we’re trying to say with our bio is that we’re looking for the type of listener who will take the time to sit with our album (and music in general) to really get to know it. We’re not as interested in appealing to people who are passive music listeners. We feel that people who seek out new music and incorporate music into their daily lives will respond positively to our music, while people who are looking for easy, quick music to listen to will move on to something else. On the other hand, the press we’ve been receiving has been comparing us to very popular and successful acts, so maybe we should just keep our mouths shut.
Any tour plans in the works?
We’re working on getting the album out to people and get some press before we start performing again. We’re looking to start touring the west coast in the fall.
How else are you guys getting your name out there?
We’re also signed to several music publishers (non-exclusively) to put the album in television and movies. We feel that with so many shows using so many styles of music in their programming, TV and films are like the new radio. Ironically, it’s easier for an unsigned band to get on TV than it is to get on the radio.
