Today’s mailbox highlight is a Johnny Cash Remixed LP, featuring hip-hop and dance remixes of Cash standards from the Sun Records catalog.
Out Oct. 14 on Compadre Records/Music World Music, the mainstream media will unfortunately focus on Snoop Dogg’s take on “I Walk the Line.”
Whereas Cash wrote timeless songs about love, loss and man’s strife, I doubt he ever thought to open a song, “Cheeah — big Johnny Cash here…yeaaahh…me and J.C. be pushin’ out this joint, cheaaah.” Meanwhile, Snoop’s approach to songwriting is ego, me me me, and compared to Cash’s historic gems, lacks substance.
The more quality tracks worth doting on include Pete Rock’s Remix of “Folsom Prison Blues,” Troublemaker’s frantic 8 -bit remix of “Straight A’s in Love” and the rockabilly, steam locomotive-charged “Rock Island Line” remix by Wolf.
Although Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, has been quoted saying dear old dad would have loved this record, I’m not he would love the Snoopster’s take. The rest of the album, is a genuine complementary effort of the Cash-blessed “Hurt” collaboration.
