Sunfold : Toy Tugboats

sunfold_toytuggies.jpgI love a good PR pitch that opens with, “XX artists can’t buy beer, but he sure can rock!”

And this is definitely the case with new Annuals-offshoot band Sunfold’s frontman:

“Kenny Florence may not yet be of legal age to buy beer, but he has a clear musical vision that he portrays in his musical project Sunfold. Toy Tugboats is the culmination of years of musical exploration and experience, resulting in a diverse blend of jazz, folk, pop, and rock.”

I first met Kenny when interviewing Annuals at SXSW 2007.

He definitely had that *spark* — even if it wasn’t sullied by the lure of liquor and women. I’ve been looking forward to the Sunfold record on the new Terpsikhore label for some time and am pleasantly surprised it’s less gritty, more polished and radio-ready than Annuals past offerings. Now now, please don’t misinterpret that I dislike Annuals – they’re actually one of my favorite modern bands right now.

Sunfold : “Sara the American Winter”

I’m simply bemused at Florence’s songwriting approach and with Toy Tugboats already floating my boat, feel Sunfold as a band may definitely have a future far beyond North Carolina, where the drinking age is indeed a true rite of passage.
