Heavenly States, Head of Femur, Poison Control Center, Hawaii Show, Thursday May 15, 2008, Uptown Bar, Minneapolis, MN

Minneapolis’ own The Hawaii Show led off the evening with a “set” of pre-recorded music set to skits. Or maybe it’s the other way around?

Led by Steve Dude (er, Barone, formerly of Lifter Puller), the rock comedy act “plays” inflatable guitars and features a keyboardist wearing a Condoleezza Rice mask. The best song they have to offer is the sacrilicious Ludachrist (featuring the Notorious G.O.D.), a song that pairs the insane with the indefensible. It’s actually pretty funny.

Poison Control Center was 50% short of a full band so they performed a quick acoustic set in the middle of the floor. Lead singer Patrick is the only game in town if you want to see someone do the splits while playing an acoustic guitar.

Head of Femur brought the energy level up with a quick but passionate set that was ignited by lead guitarist Mike Elsener’s skillful, fiery playing. Their tunes are catchy and bright even though singer Matt Focht wails with a mournful howl.

Rounding out the (late) night, Heavenly States brought pure pop pleasure to the proceedings, but the crowd had thinned as the time flowed on. The remaining people had no complaints about Ted Nesseth and crew’s catchy songs and funny covers. The States closed with an awesome version of Morning Exercise and left everybody wanting more. –Tim O’Regan
