If you’re looking for a sound that will come at you fast and hard, Tokyo Police Club’s Elephant Shell (Saddle Creek) is right for you. The youthful energetic drumbeats bring me back to a teenage sense of urgency, yet the lyrics are heavy and carry you through the album from start to finish, telling a new story with each song. You’ll find yourself listening to the album repeatedly trying to piece the story together (it’ll definitely get you up and going).
Tokyo Police Club : “In a Cave” (mp3)
My personal favorite from this album, “Juno,†adds a little flavor by mixing a more mellow tune with the punchy beats that flow throughout each song—I find myself standing back, slowing down and just letting the music engage my mind.
Although Tokyo Police Club will definitely be a permanent part of my music listening, I have to say that I’m disappointed I didn’t hear a song that I like better than “Box†from their Smith EP. – Mary Elizabeth Sisk
Elephant Shell drops tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22 and the group play Minneapolis’ Varsity Theater Tuesday, May 6 with Maps and Atlases and Smoosh.
