I first saw The Sword live in March of 2006. The group’s grumbling, crushing, Sabbath meets Zep Maiden riffs kicked off a typical night at the 7th St. Entry with an unforgiving rock assault of tracks off their debut, Age of Winters.
More than two years later, the Austin quartet have a new album on Kemado Records, Gods of the Earth. Tracks like “The Frost-Giant’s Daughter,” “Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians” and “The Sundering” showcase thundering metal riffs with ridiculous, Tolkien-laddled lyrics. “Under the Boughs,” originally on the Invaders Kemado compilation also makes an appearance.
If you like your rock and roll with a healthy dose of classic metal influence, this band is for you, and GOTE is a tremendous asset in your musical library.

There is a big tour starting April 14, but it comes nowhere near Minneapolis.
