Interview with Kadro : Life of Luxury

January 2nd, 2008 · 3 Comments

kadrolifeofluxury.jpgDetroit rock group Kadro dropped us a disc a month or so ago — just before their Saint Paul tour date. I spaced it, though. I get that way, so you have to remind me.

The disc is good. I particularly like the track “Living in Fear” with the narrative Ozzy vocals, Richard Patrick screams and grooving rhythm section. I’d speed the whole song up 20 bps, though. Same with the title track. Seems like a lot of amateur lag in a few of the songs. Overall, Kadro is a solid power trio with superb potential.

Here’s our interview with Kadro leader Zach Kadro - better late than never:

Who is Kadro?
Kadro is a three piece rock group from Detroit writing and performing original music. The band consists of drums, bass, guitar and vocals

Ah, the power trio. We hear a wide range on your disc, Life of Luxury. How do you classify your music?
We classify our music as rock, or indie rock, cause we’re independent of any label further classification might include, punk, alternative,

More specifically, your music incorporates a lot of traditional rock and blues. Who are your influences?
We are influenced by the grunge music of the 90’s, punk rock of the70’s and 80’s, early rock stuff, psychedelic 60’s stuff, surf rock, jazz, metal, world and anything else we’ve heard on radios records and live shows

How do you keep Kadro from sounding imitative?
We try to do our own thing and express our individuality on our instruments while staying within some parameters of popular song. We like musical intervals a little off the beaten path, different rhythmic ideas, and just being honest and progressive, challenging ourselves. I guess just being ourselves and not trying to imitate what someone else has done before. Each person is unique and true expression of an individual will therefore be unique

Tell us about the title track off your debut disc, “Life of Luxury.”
“Life of Luxury” was a collaboration between vocalist Zach Kadro and drummer Zach Pliska. Pliska came up with the song title, and Kadro went on from there to write the lyrics from the concept of the title. Popular culture is flooded with luxury… the need, the want, the desire. It’s unsustainable on a mass scale and leads many individuals into debt and unhappiness. It’s a money can’t buy happiness kind of idea and a wanting to reconnect with the earth with nature. Life is about more than luxury, and our search is to find a deeper more rewarding lifestyle and outlook. The track was recorded live in the studio with vocals overdubbed. It was a good musical collaboration and seems to be well received live. We liked the concept and the song so much, we titled our album Life of Luxury after it.

Any touring coming up?
We toured a lot this fall in October and November and will be busy touring throughout the winter and spring as we also prepare another album to be release sometime in 2008.

What else is new?
We sold our first 100 copies of the album on tour and are excited about all our endeavors. We did a benefit concert for Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan in September, raising money for them. We had a great experience with it and want to do more shows like that in 2008. We met a lot of great people and fellow artists on tour and believe strongly in the future of independent music in America and abroad. We’re committed do delivering quality original music through our albums and live shows.

Thanks for the interview, I happen to agree with your suggestions to speed up a few of the songs. The responses are actually from Zach Kadro, it’s not a big deal we get mixed up alot cause we have the same first name. Hope to play in Minneapolis again soon! We really appreciate the coverage. Cheers, ZK
