Liverpool, England’s The Cubical isn’t the Michael Scott tribute I expected this morning.
Instead, my ears were greeted with a retro Bo Diddley-esque track steeped in Louisiana swamp grass.
Check out the group’s new EP title track below:

I am deathly tired of Britcore music, we get a lot more of it over here than you do, what with us being under the thumb of the oppressors and all. That having been said, I actually really like this song. It’s got an authenticity and un-self-consciousness that all the revival bands are falling short of, probably because they’re busy wearing denim. I’ll have to look out for this band.

I’m living in Minneapolis but The Cubical are good friends of mine back home in Liverpool. They’ll be glad of the ‘authenticity’ compliment; some background knowledge of The Cubical will tell you that their influences eschew most British bands, past and present.

Someone told me about this band a while back before their EP release, but i didnt get around to checking them out… I shouldve done though ’cause this track is brilliant. Reminds me of Beefheart but somehow its fresh and relevant. I love the bizzare solo and the lyrics are incredible. I imagine it would be amazing live. Ive checked out their myspace (myspace.com/thecubicalthecubical) and all the other tracks up there are just as good as this one. I’m genuinley excited about this band, and that doesnt happen very often! I think I’ll buy that EP for myself as a little Christmas treat.

ive seen the cubical live and they are absolutely unbelievable but this ep shows they’re just as comfortable blasting out their romperstomps in the studio. this is superb, if these guys dont make it big big, i’ll eat a huge pie, and wonder why
