Interview: Stook! : When the Needle Hits the Wax

stookalbum.jpgStook! When the Needle Hits the Wax Release Date: October 26, 2007 Label: Draw Fire Records

We first told you about Stook! (aka Josh Stuckey) back in February 2006.

Since then, Stook! has experienced a huge liftoff of popularity in the Twin Cities, in large part to his signature sound, guy next door persona and candy-loving posts across local message boards.

When you have a local roots-rock songwriter extolling how awesome the Twin Cities are, how awesome the scene is here and doing his part to make it better, how can you not embrace, support and love this guy? We mean, seriously people.

We sat down with the Stookster! To talk about the success of his last album, recording the new one and seasonal affective disorder. Read on...

What's your life been like since Soundtrack to my Minneapolis came out in February 2006? Well, we like to think that playing at the Varsity Theater is a definite step up from the Terminal Bar. It is also much easier to book a CD release show when more than your mothers have heard of you. For the most part, life has been pretty much the same as it ever was... not that i am complaining!

You've "made it" - thank God for moms. Can you tell us about the recording of When the Needle Hits the Wax? We had a ton of fun recording this record. We made a switch from the basement to the rehearsal space, which has its good points and its bad points. We got a new computer too, which means we can use four mics at a time as opposed to two like on the first record.

Jordan Carlson played the drums again, Toby Lee Marshall did most of the keyboards and a bunch of backup vocals, Caleb Garn once again mixed, mastered, engineered, produced, and played Bass, Peter Lochner played some guitar, and we got Jonathan Earl alot more involved on Guitar and Backup Vocals. We were also really fortunate to have good friend Jesse Totushek add some tasty mandolin work.

Are you ready to perform the new tracks? It has been, for the most part, mostly done for a while. So it is really nice to start getting some feedback on the songs, since i think we have all heard them a zillion times by now!

Probably the best thing we have going for us as a band is that Peter Lochner in addition to being a great musician and friend is a brilliant artist, and I couldn't be more ecstatic about the design and artwork that he did for both of our records. I would say nothing essentially changed as far as recording, still just us in a dank room trying to make a decent record.

Whereas "Soundtrack" was songs are about experiences or people who live in Minneapolis, what are the primary influences for WTNHTW? I guess they are about pretty much the same thing as the last record. I hate to go into it too much because i think that a good song should have relevance on a personal level to the person that is listening. I would hate to ruin it for someone. I guess I am still living here, so I can't help but write about it. After all, this is the greatest place in the world to live, and all the women are foxes, which probably has something to do with Scandinavian genetics, so inspiration is everywhere.

Tell us about the track "Seasonal Affective Disorder." That's one of my favorites on the record. It is a really different style compared to what we have released thus far, so I am really proud of attempting to stretch out a bit, and hopefully hitting the nail on the head. Jordan spent 4-5 years of his life studying the classical marimba, which is like a wooden vibraphone, so we thought it would be fun to get some vibes work down... and he did a great job. I hope his parent hear it and feel like they didn't waste a ton of money on his education.... but i doubt it.

Tell us about the CD release show this week. We are really looking forward to it! Varsity Theatre in Dinkytown, Friday, October 26th is where all the action is going down! Molly Maher will be starting out the show at 9:00 pm. Stook! and the Jukes will be next at 10:00 pm and will be followed by Dan Israel and Martin Devaney. Dan Israel is also releasing his new record, Turning, that night. Should be an all-around amazing roots-rock bill.

Anything else new? Have you tried those limited edition Elvis Presley Banana Cream Peanut Butter Cups?

We told you he loves candy.

Catch Stook! and his CD Release Show this Friday at the Varsity Theatre with Dan Israel.
