Falling Up
Captiva
Release Date: October 2, 2007
Label: BEC Recordings

As far as the Warped Tour crowd goes, we tend to favor the harder, faster, more spirited groups. And we’ll admit, the six metallic troubadours from Merthyr Tydfil, Wales known as The Blackout do their best to balance the screamo with melody.

It’s still too formulaic for us to endorse, but in case Welsh emo-metal in need of a throat lozenge is your bag, here’s an mp3 off their new album, We Are the Dynamite.

The Blackout : “Prepare For a Wound” (mp3)

And if The Blackout’s release wasn’t doing it for us, Falling Up’s lighter, the world is a happy oyster of love and laughter approach isn’t going to cut it. Captiva is the Oregon group’s third album and it’s making us think maybe we’re just not in touch with our sophomore selves anymore. The drama of who likes who, who’s popular and who’s wearing what to where is easily dismissed, and so is the soundtrack to that mentality.

If you have a teenage daughter looking to find some angst-ridden emo with a positive message, buy this for her. At least she won’t go goth.
