Minneapolis indie rock group Pictures of Then are celebrating a CD Release party tonight. Their new album, Crushed By Lights, smells of Built to Spill and Malkmus — perhaps helping to further shape the new “Minneapolis Sound.” It’s upbeat, short and sweet and riddled with deceit.

We sat down with the band to chat about the group, the release show and sand. Lots of sand…
Who is Pictures of Then?
As the story goes…in the dark land of Emm-Tel-Vee there lived an Evil Blind Troll who had dominion over all of the Fozzlebogs that lived beneath the ground. Every Tuesday at dawn the Evil Blind Troll would send the Fozzlebogs forth from the deep to prey upon the unsuspecting children in the neighboring lands. These seemingly beautiful beings would dance and flitter about, spewing their shiny new bubble-gum balls for all of the boys and girls to see. Lured by the sweet scent and clippity-clappity sound of the bubble-gum balls as they spotted the ground, the children would rush to gobble them up, but, by the next morning a terrible and sinister thing occurred. One by one the children began to disappear, until the day came when there was not a single child to be found, you see, the Fozzlebogs were once little children too. It was on this day that the Lord of The Clouds looked down upon the people and having great pity on them breathed into existence a collective of five powerful beings. These beings were created for one purpose, to defeat the Evil Blind Troll from the land of Emm-Tel-Vee and transform the Fozzlebogs back into happy little children – this band of five was called PICTURES OF THEN.
Where was the album recorded? Is this your debut? What was the process like?
We assembled just beyond the mighty river in the hallowed halls of The Terrarium to create our debut weapon “Crushed By Lights”. Guided by “Sir Orris” (keeper of The Terrarium) and his apprentice “Miller the Brave” we embarked upon a dangerous and mystical quest – keeping our axes sharp and our alchemy in tune for the coming of the great release.
Tell us about Track #3, “Samson.”
This particular account tells of the one whom we meant on the road, by him we were shown unimaginable things and learned of many great secrets. As the day of battle draws ever near, we hold close to our hearts the wise words bestowed upon us by this humble soul.
Tell us about your CD Release show tonight.
This will be an eve of great celebration! We call upon all brave souls who would dare come and stand with us against the wiles of the Evil Blind Troll so that we can together deliver a fatal blow and let the enemy know that his time will soon be at an end!
Is it true your practice space boasts more sand than a Lake Minnetonka beach?
