Review: Atreyu : Lead Sails Paper Anchors

Label: Hollywood Records

Despite fan base outcry for selling out, Orange County metalcore group Atreyu have stumbled into some early success with their new album released just last week, Lead Sails Paper Anchors.

The 12-track album, the group’s first with Hollywood Records and Roadrunner Records, takes a softer approach than Atreyu’s previous three albums –perhaps thanks to producer John Feldmann, who is known for producing unit-selling albums for Ashlee Simpson, Good Charlotte, Hilary Duff and The Used.

The disc topped out on Billboard’s Top 200 this week at No. 8, and Billboard’s Rock and Hard Rock Album charts at No. 1, making it the highest-charting album of the band’s career.

With past tour appearances on Warped (’05) and Ozzfest (’06), the group landed the third slot before Korn and Evanescence on the 2007 Family Values tour (wrapped last week) and are kicking off a headline tour here shortly (skipping Minneapolis).

It seems to us those three festivals in three years don’t really mix, and perhaps that’s an indicator of where the animosity groundswell regarding this album starts.

We listened to the entire album and probably won’t revisit Atreyu until their next album comes out — an album that will most likely piss off all the new fans Lead Sails will earn them. But we bet those album sales checks are nice, huh?
