Myth Nightclub, Maplewood, MN

Music started at 5:30 — on a Friday. And considering Cursive headlined a First Avenue show not even a year ago, Against Me! has a top MTV video and Mastodon is the next wave in grunge metal, it was definitely a strange evening for a daylight rock show.

Cursive was dressed in tuxedo garb, with the ever-changing facial hair of Tim Kasher trimmed extra close. Some diehard Cursive fans (us included) packed into the front rows to chant along with “Art is Hard” and some new stuff from Happy Hollow. Definitely not one of their better shows, and we completely blame the time of day and makeup of the crowd.

What were they thinking striking out on this tour as the second opener for a metal band?

Against Me! came out swinging, engaged the younger half of the crowd and remarked three times about the sun shining through the windows. The mosh pit was full, the crowd was surfed and snot rockets were shot.

Mastodon was gruff, tough with an audience who couldn’t get enough.

Gotta say - last time they were in town Mastodon played an amazing show. Haven’t made it out to the Myth yet for a show - though the pictures look like it ain’t all that shabby

It was a marked change from their last local show here at Station 4 (smallish bar in downtown St. Paul). They’re a good band if the levels are set correctly. Still weird they wrapped up their show before 9:30 p.m.

Chris, have you been to Myth? It’s a Clear Channel-infused mecca in the suburbs (you literally park in a Toys R Us parking lot). Would love to hear your perspective.

As a long time Against Me! fan, I was both surprised and(after missing their recent show at Triple Rock)excited that they would be returning to the Twin Cities area. As always, the band put on a stellar show and despite the location, corporate sponsorship, Toys R Us parking, scantily clad waitresses and countdown to the “rave” scheduled to begin moments after Mastodon strummed their last chords — I found the Myth a decent place to see a show. No poles blocking views and a spacious floor for the punk rock kids and metal heads that made the trek to rawwwk in Suburbia impressed me. Would I go to the Myth for another show anytime soon? Probably not. It’s still too far, too shiny and just too weird for someone used to more grungy and intimate venues.

[…] Against Me!, who played a rockin’ Minneapolis show last month, will release their new album,  New Wave, on July 10th. The follow-up to 2005’s Searching For A Former Clarity was produced by Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins). […]

[…] Against Me! impressed us at their May Minneapolis show, with energy and performance gusto making up for staid chord progressions and lazy lyrics. New Wave material will give the boys even more ammo when assaulting audiences at this year’s Lollapalooza and remaining summer tour. Filed under Music - Album Review at approx. 10:13 pm - […]

[…] Although it’s the early, all-ages show, for those of you disappointed by Cursive’s last stop in the Twin Cities, be assured they won’t be playing at 6 p.m. Hell, New Model Army’s visas were denied, so it doesn’t even look like there will be a late show. […] On their last pass through Minneapolis, Kasher’s rock band, Cursive, earned themselves a 5:30 p.m. set time opening for Against Me! Ugh. People weren’t even off work yet. […]
