Midnight Movies @ SXSW

When L.A.’s Midnight Movies took the stage on Thursday, the gathered crowd pushed towards the front for the first time that day.

Although we listened through the upcoming Lion the Girl LP a few times prior to the show and enjoyed the EP, we weren’t sure what to expect from the group live.

Gena Olivier is a musical treasure. Admist the unforgiving sun and talkative free-loading yokels in the back sucking down free BBQ and Miller Lites, Olivier had an heir of royalty. She was indeed too cool to be there. Perhaps too cool to enunciate the chorus. She should be locked away and only brought out for A-list parties.

The group was tight, “Patient Eye” shut up everyone, and maybe, just maybe we were cool enough to be at this party for three and half minutes.

Oh yeah, and we bumped into drummer Sandra Vu before L.A.’s Midnight Movies took the stage. At the time, we were paging through the latest issue of Filter Magazine and had actually stopped on the MM story. Naturally, she hated the impeccably attractive photo of herself.

In addition to these tracks, look out for the “Lion Song” from the new Lion the Girl LP.
