Brooklyn’s Earl Greyhound — a Zeppelin-inspired power trio who take fervent notes from other bluesy psychedelic 70s groups like Cream, Big Star and T.Rex — pounded through hit after hit from their must-buy album, Soft Targets, at the Mohawk Bar’s SXSW show on Wednesday.

Sporting the most accurate bass drum-to-biceps ratio we’ve ever seen, drummer Ricc Sheridan effortless laid down a heartbounding beat guitarist Matt Whyte and bassist Kamara Thomas to rock the capacity crowd in a drizzly Austin.

Flower-power spirit paired with sloppy blues guitar solos, anyone? Hell, even Mayor Will Wynn stopped in to say a few words, including how awesome Earl Greyhound truly is…

Witnessing the group’s live performance has further cemented our theory that Earl Greyhound’s quality 70s rock licks, solos and song structure can only help the genre’s renewed pop renaissance.

Note: Thanks to Gordon for pointing out drummer Christopher Bear went on to play with Grizzly Bear. Current drummer is Ricc Sheridan.

I saw them perform at Mohawk and the dingy backyard of Mug Shots. Both shows were SICK! They definitely were the show to see at SXSW. If you haven’t seen them, YOU HAVE TO GO!… and if you don’t own SOFT TARGETS… BUY IT!

[…] Not only did this band rock my face off at SXSW 07, their debut album, Soft Targets, (Some Records) is still a throwback favorite when I grow tired of Wolfmother and Black Keys, AND my photo above that features the Mayor of Austin and Earl Greyhound was actually printed in a high school text book used in Texas public schools this year. You would think I have some pull because of that…but no. No, I don’t. […]
