Endless War (1988)
Label: MVD Audio

Realm delivers some surprisingly melodic thrash metal in the vein of Fate’s Warning, Testament and Iron Maiden. Fast, riff-heavy and full of sudden changes, the tunes are engaging enough to keep your interest 20 years after its original release. High-pitched screams and squealing guitars dominate the first 4 tracks, but then Realm start throwing curveballs, including a head-snappingly fast and inventive thrash cover of Eleanor Rigby. (Yes, it’s good. No, your mom won’t like it)

Realm’s songs never overstay their welcome; many of them are done so fast you don’t know what hit you. As with all of the best thrash metal there is a definite punk influence here — the only difference is Realm’s undeniable technical skill. The remastered Endless War might even win some new fans amongst young, discerning metalheads who grow tired of the growls and cookie monster vocals that dominate modern metal. -Tim O’Regan
