Nirvana : In Utero, A Classic Album Under Review

Nirvana In Utero, A Classic Album Under Review Studio: MVD There's no question that Nirvana (and ultimately Kurt Cobain) have achieved an iconic status when it comes to influence on today's music, the culture and habits of today's generation and the fashion statement of the wool cardigan. It's not so much that the sound or riffs being written were exceeding revolutionary -- after all, grunge is just that - grungey -- but it's important to note the state of music at the time was abhorrent, and this sound and approach may have salvaged rock and roll from the depths of popular pop. For example, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - an absolute pop single in itself - shared the '91 Billboard Hot 100 with Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, Gloria Estefan, CeCe Peniston and M.C. Hammer's "Addams Groove." Under Review helps us frame up the evolution of punk rock and the musical climate surrounding In Utero that made it the album de triumph it has become today. With well-known and rarely seen live and in-studio performances, exclusive interviews and an oddly large amount of former drummer Chad Channing interviews, this is one of the better documentaries on the group we've ever seen. Of note, we highly enjoyed the dot-connecting with hardcore punk groups like Black Flag and Sonic Youth and underground rock bands like the Pixies, as well as the track-by-track history behind each song. While more glorifying than critiquing, In Utero, A Classic Album Under Review fulfills our '06 Cobain worship quota. Be sure to check out the "Hardest Interactive Nirvana Quiz Ever" in the Extras section. And yet, it neglected to mention our favorite Cobain fun fact -- his middle name was Donald.
