Foo Fighters
Skin and Bones
Label: RCA
Release Date: November 7, 2006
Recorded live during three sold-out shows at Los Angeles’ Pantages Theater with an expanded eight-piece lineup, this week Dave Grohl birthed his heralded live Foo Fighters album - a project he’s called his Physical Graffiti in media interviews.
Yet, unlike Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged in New York - which set the standard for acoustic rock music albums - Skin and Bones will be easily “Trampled Underfoot” “Ten Years Gone.”
Sure, the acoustic arrangements of hits like “Big Me,” “My Hero” and “Everlong” are a special treat and undoubtedly made a great live show, but Grohl’s proven energy simply doesn’t exist on these 15 tracks on tape.
Instead of a fresh approach to beloved rock tracks, Grohl & Co. begat a belabored attempt at capturing an intimate acoustic set in a sold out L.A. theater that may have well been an arena filled with Nickelback fans.
Maybe Nirvana’s “this might be the last time we ever play together and/or live to see next week” acoustic set feeling will never be matched, but Grohl was the one person we would have picked to do an acoustic album right.
