David & the Citizens
Until the Sadness is Gone
Label: Friendly Fire Recordings
Release Date: October 31, 2006
You say, “Scandinavian Bright Eyes,” and we say, “Mmmm….Swedish indie pop served cold.”
David & the Citizens are releasing their first U.S. release this week, Until the Sadness is Gone, and it’s an eclectic, folk surprise.
Part Bright Eyes (on prozac) and part Neutral Milk Hotel, this disc has plenty of solid lyrical allusions matched with emotional, yet pretension-free jamming.
The story goes: during the recording of the album, and in between bouts of Playstation and Jim Beam bourbon, the band hung different metallic and glass objects on a string from the ceiling and hit them softly and randomly, “to produce the sound of a drunken boat in a storm.”
We can’t pinpoint those sounds, but we do like the story.
