Traveled to SLC for work Mon/Tues and had the opportunity for a concert Monday night. Unfortunately Wolfmother wasn’t playing until Tuesday - and that would’ve been too good to be true!
So when a Pollstar search turned up nothing, I e-mailed the music editors at the SL Tribune. Turns out Monday is a pretty slow night in this town, due to a practice known as family home evening, but they were able to refer me to Oakland’s Experimental Dental School playing at this hole called Kilby Court.
Tip #1: When Kilby’s Web site says they’ll start at 7:30, that’s when the music really starts.
In all the shows I’ve seen across the entire Midwest for a decade now, the opener usually starts an hour after doors open (usually later) and the headliner would never play before 10 p.m.
Well, I showed up at 9:30 and all three bands were done playing and almost all packed up.
Tip #2: Salt Lake City is serious about their family home evening, sound ordinances and getting in a concert before the sun sets.
The dude at the door said they only had 8 people show up anyway, but I was definitely disappointed. I missed EDS when they played the Triple Rock in Mpls last Monday and have been enjoying streaming their tracks online. Alas, I was back to my hotel by 10 p.m. and there wasn’t a single live music venue open at that time in the entire Salt Lake City metro area.
Tip #3: SLC’s music scene is actually worse than Des Moines’.

Dude,
That’s hilarious! Those silly Mormons…
Wish I would have caught Wolfmother last Saturday (instead of Cloud Cult). I screwed up…

Kilby Court is actually a wonderful venue so it’s too bad you didn’t catch the show. It’s easily one of the more unique places to see live music in the country and I’ve had plenty of great experiences there– plenty of pictures in the “live image archive” section of my blog. Also, I suppose it’s extremely difficult to “get” a town based on one night’s experience there, but your characterization of SLC as somehow backwards or staid or whatever is quite a ways from the truth. Just so you know.

Thanks for the feedback, Jeremy! I’ll definitely check out a show there next time I’m in town. I’ll just remember to show up early and bring a flask. As for the town being musically staid, you have to admit it’s no Austin, Seattle or Athens…no music anywhere after 10 p.m.? ugh!

I’ve rarely been to a show that ended before 10pm. In fact, following the two and a half hour drive I usually make back to flyover country following the shows, it’s generally no earlier than 2am. Just sayin’.
