Hard Fi
Stars of CCTV
Label: Wea/Atlantic
Iowans call it a “Shazam,” most Americans call it an “ATM Machine,” and Hard-Fi call it a “Cash Machine.” Either way, the concept is the same. Push the button; get paid.
And that’s what the Middlesex-based Brit rockers are banking for with their self-financed debut album, Stars of CCTV, which is already a top album in the UK and building buzz with its release and major label push in the U.S.
In fact, you’ve probably already heard the first single, “Cash Machine,” especially since Hard Fi are one of the hottest bands out of Britain right now (cough - insert Arctic Monkeys reference here).
Regardless of the hype, there’s a good album here. The other two singles, “Hard to Beat” and reggae-influenced “Better Do Better” are at least semi-different songs compared to “Cash Machine.” Influences are vast, from hip-hop to punk to electronica. Our favorite track is “Unnecessary Trouble,” which has a Smashmouth vibe to it (weird in a good way).
And although the album could have used a little grit and grime to it — the last few tracks sound like U2 leftovers — it has enough pop rock hooks to be lovable by almost anyone.
Unfortunately, Hard-Fi had to postpone their first U.S. “withdrawal” this month, as group founder Richard Archer has some kind of throat infection - causing the group to miss Coachella and postpone their west coast dates. But hopefully soon the group will be back on tour, including their Chicago Lollapalooza gig.
More info on their upcoming DVD, White Stripes cover and video streams here.

“ATM Machine”.. isn’t that a little redundant?

I was totally going to write something about that but it didn’t quite flow!
