Electropolis nailed it but the Southern Theater flopped

February 20th, 2006 · 3 Comments

The Electropolis plays Metropolis show at the Southern Theater last night was nothing short of astonishing — a live interpretive staggering spectacle of breathtaking, often bewildering soundtrack to the 1927 film.

After a mind-numbing first set leading into the intermission, Bill Mike, Desdamona, Diana Grasselli and JELLOSLAVE set up mini-stages in the rear stage left and right of the theater — creating a true surround sound experience for the sold out crowd.

Apart from the abhorrent and unprofessional reception of the Southern Theater staff to the six latecomers (including myself) who missed the opener, the evening was a huge success.

Fans typically show up late to concerts — Duh. And for the record, we didn’t interfere with the performance in the least. We simply took our seats during the intermission between sets when everyone else got up to use the restroom or purchase a beverage. Yet upon arriving we were greeted to locked doors, Will Call attitude and snobbish remarks up and down by 3-4 staffers.

The show rocked, venue was perfect and Electropolis again proved their talent has no boundaries. However, I don’t look forward to hanging at the Southern in the future and will be sure to let everyone know how they treat their guests.

UPDATE (2/22):
Got a note from Michael of Electropolis today I wanted to be sure to share with you:

Greg,

Sorry to hear that the locked door at the Southern almost destroyed your night on Sunday. Please know that we had no idea that was happening outside AT ALL. Very embarrassing, to say it nicely.

Other than these problems that have gotten back to us, the Southern was a real treat to work with. I want you to know that we are going to address these issues so things go more smoothly for a music audience in the future. Frankly, they are not accustomed to putting on music shows, and the fact that music fans tend to toddle in a bit more than their typical crowd. I hope you’ll give them another chance, because we want to do more music there in the future, the setting is just so stunning.

SO, we are thrilled that you enjoyed the show! Thanks so much for all of the support. Sorry for these hassles, and I will get back to you with what I hear from the Southern on how these problems will be addressed in the future. Our listeners and audience are our most cherished asset, and we do not want anything to get between them and our music. We also understand that running a venue is a difficult and noble endeavor, and we’ll work to find a compromise that will work for everyone.

Peace,
Michael Ferrier
ELECTROPOLIS

PS: If you want to use this letter on your blog, just so your readers know that we are addressing these serious problems, please be our guest. Up to you.

I appreciate the note. However, as a redirect, it’s important to note it wasn’t a locked door that put a sour taste in our mouths.

It was the attitude of the Southern staff throughout the greeting at the locked door, asking if we had tickets, looking up our Will Call tix, making little snipes about their policy, answering when intermission is, where our seats were located, etc. — all that in addition to the back and forth dialogue between staffers about “latecomers,” even though there were six PAYING customers (albeit late) standing right in front of them being ever-so polite.

So if you’re keeping score at home, Electropolis +5 points. Southern Theater -20.

I actually had a very similar experience at the Southern on Sunday evening. I arrived to the show on time and made it to my seat, but during the intermission we went out to the lobby to grab a beverage and it literally took ten minutes to get someone to help us. It took the whole time of the intermission to purchase one bottle of water, no joke. And it wasn’t even that the staff was busy, there were two rude women behind the counter gabbing with each other and yelling at some poor guy who came late and couldn’t get in the door. (Was that you? Could have been.)

    The show was amazing, though.

Hilarious. That probably wasn’t me, but I’m not surprised at all. I was CRAVING a beer by the time we got to our seats, but I knew I didn’t dare leave again for fear of breaking Southern Theater protocol again. So we just bopped over to the Triple Rock after the show. We’ll have to meet up sometime. Going to Animal Collective Sunday?

No, I’ll be at the Turf Sunday for Charlie Parr/JoAnna James/Mark Olson. You should stop by if you have a minute, or I’m sure we’ll bump into each other soon.
