We Are Scientists : With Love and Squalor

We Are Scientists
With Love and Squalor

If anyone can make being a scientist cool, I never thought it would be Gary Sinise. Yet he’s doing his best on the CBS’ hit series CSI: New York (and for the record, takes his glasses on and off approximately 80 percent less than David Caruso).

So I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the latest indie band to come from New York would have their single used in the opening scenes of their first February episode. It’s not selling out these days, it’s necessary.

Ladies and gentlemen, may we introduce some cool geek rockers – We Are Scientists. After three self-released EPs, the Brooklyn indie rock trio signed with Virgin Records, crammed 12 songs into under 40 minutes with ease and With Love and Squalor — their major-label debut — was born. And it’s a fun album full of dancey, catchy tracks. My fav track is “The Great Escape,” which is totally repetitive but equally catchy.

From Bloc Party to the Killers, Franz Ferdinand to the Strokes, these scientists have many friends in their soundscape but still manage to define an indie sound and style their own.

Hell, even Gary Sinise likes their flavor of direct pop-rock when he hears it, although we can’t promise actual scientists will dig it.
