Amusement Parks on Fire

With a picturesque chordal intro segued into the progression for “Venus in Cancer,” Amusement Parks on Fire’s debut album kicks off with determined youthful spirit that only builds as the album unfurls like whole leaf tea bud steeping in sultry cup of talent.

Totally absent is the aura of conformity, marketability and need to disguise their UK accent for the American public. But the most striking thing that you won’t be able to tell just by listening to the album is that a young Brit named Mike Feerick played every instrument and self-recorded this album. Yeah, just like Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters.

But before you go leaping to assumptions, I should tell you this young gent was a mere 16 years-old when he started the recording process. Now 20, Feerick has assembled a cast of fellow Nottingham Brits to tour and is well on his way into Rock history.

Sure the heavy bass carryover muddies the already-imperfect sound, drumming is often uninspired, lyrics are lackluster and the ambient noise — while well-orchestrated — is just grating enough to skip forward to the next track at times.

However, the musical prowess shown in Amusement’s first album is so encouraging, I’ve totally regained my faith in UK imports (for the time being – no promises).

Bright spots on the album include “Asphalt’s” piano-led interlude that shatters into clamor, “88’s” Floydian-dubbed dialogue, “Venus in Cancer’s” ability to make the overused (i.e. Fuel) tremolo into the basis for a superb track, and really the last two tracks, that (when compared to the rest of the album) shouldn’t belong, but do.

I’d love to see Grohl give this kid some pointers. Burn baby, burn!

Amusement Parks on Fire self-titled debut is in stores now from Filter US Recordings. The group will tour the U.S. this summer, including select dates with the Kaiser Chiefs, Caesars and The Raveonettes.
