The Kills: No Wow

May 25th, 2005 · No Comments

The Kills’ blow-up album, “No Wow,” forgets it’s supposed to sound like The Velvet Underground slash White Stripes and ends up becoming its own art-rock masterpiece.

The title track features Alison Mosshart grimacing, “You’re gonna have to step over my dead body/ Before you walk out that door.” Fortunately, we think Mosshart sings like she’s dead anyway. And we like it.

Written in under two weeks in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the London-based frontwoman Allison “VV” Mosshart and British guitarist/studio whiz Jamie “Hotel” Hince journeyed to the land of motor oil and cheese after searching out Sly Stone’s Flickinger mixing board that ruined the lives of anyone who came near it (long story).

Originally planned for composition on a Moog keyboard but really played on guitar, the album comes off emotionless regardless of the cheesy drum machine. Mosshart even sings like a robot.

However, we like emotionless rock that can’t help but yield emotion. Check it out.

The Kills’ “No Wow” is in stores now from RCA Records.
